What would you do if you got a call saying that your child has been suspended for throwing a tantrum? Sound strange? It gets better. The child in question is Salecia Johnson, a 6 year old kindergartner from Georgia who threw a tantrum, shoved some books off the shelves which hurt the principal. This was thought as just cause to call the police and place the child in handcuffs!
Are these people serious?? Handcuffing a 6 year-old for throwing a tantrum?? The person in question is A CHILD who acted like A CHILD! I can understand if the child deliberately chose to hurt the principal, but from what I read, the bookshelf fell after the books were thrown on the floor, there was no premeditation. The worst part is that this child is on suspension from school until August, which means she would miss the rest of the school year due to her actions.
As I read the article, I kept thinking that this must have been a prank, but it wasn’t. This child was targeted for no reason I can think of. What possible motive could this child have to be treated like a criminal? I’m not an expert but I am a mother who has had her daughter throw tantrums when she was younger, and while I didn’t like it, I knew that it was a passing phase she had to go through, not a criminal act.
What kind of person, let alone a principal, would have a 6 year old child be handcuffed and suspended for doing something that all kids do? Where are the teachers who are supposed to protect the child in this situation? Why was there no one to help this child, no one to restrain the principal from calling the police, ultimately labeling this child a criminal?
What kind of society are we becoming if we are labeling children who throw tantrums as criminals? I’m still shaking my head over the absurdity of the whole thing, but the bottom line is that this child was severely punished for acting like a child. Does anyone else think this is unjustified? That’s my take on this, what’s yours?
